1. Background:
African Parks Network (APN) is a South African non-profit organization founded in 2000 in response to the decline of protected areas and biodiversity. Today, APN manages 24 parks across 13 African countries.
In 2010, the Government of the Republic of Congo and APN signed a 25-year Public-Private Partnership (PPP), renewed in 2020, to support the sustainable management of Odzala-Kokoua National Park (PNOK) and the Lossi Gorilla Sanctuary.
To strengthen its operational capacity, Odzala-Kokoua National Park is seeking to recruit a Field Operations Manager.
2. Job Purpose:
The Field Operations Manager is responsible for coordinating, supervising, and optimizing all logistical, technical, and infrastructure-related operations within the park.
The Field Operations Manager ensures operational continuity and the efficiency of support services by effectively managing resources, infrastructure, and teams under their responsibility.
3. Key Responsibilities:
1. Infrastructure

  • Oversee the development and maintenance of park infrastructure and surrounding areas through the Infrastructure Development Manager
  • Monitor budgets and control costs related to infrastructure projects
  •  Supervise procurement processes and contract execution.

2. Fleet and Stock Management

  • Oversee the management of the entire vehicle fleet through the Fleet Manager, including licenses, permits, servicing, fuel and oil management, spare parts inventory, safety, SOP compliance, and technical upgrades
  • Supervise the maintenance of the air fleet through the pilot, including licensing, servicing, fuel and oil management, spare parts, safety standards, operational procedures, and technical upgrades
  • Oversee stock management procedures related to operations, including spare parts, tools, and fuel consumption, through the Stock Manager, including regular controls
  • Ensure regular (at least monthly) stock checks with the Stock Manager and maintain well-organized storage facilities

 
3. Workshop

  • Oversee all workshop activities and ensure the functioning of Odzala-Kokoua National Park’s fleet (vehicles, heavy-equipment, motorbikes, boats, etc.), including servicing, repairs and stock-management through a dedicated Head of Workshop

3. Logistics

  • Oversee the coordination and organization of transport for goods and personnel across the park and between bases through the Logistics Manager
  • Ensure the availability of appropriate transport means (vehicles, aircraft, boats where applicable)
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and operational procedures related to movement
  • Coordinate with logistics teams and other departments to ensure smooth operations

4. Technology

  • Oversee the activities of the IT department through the Technology Manager
  • Ensure availability and performance of IT systems and communication networks
  • Ensure implementation of data and system security measures
  • Monitor the development and improvement of communication infrastructure

5. Management and Coordination

  • Supervise, lead, and develop teams under his/her responsibility
  • Ensure job descriptions are established and updated
  • Ensure effective coordination between departments

6. Other Responsibilities

  • Oversee the development, maintenance, and management of staff canteens
  • Perform any other duties assigned by management within the scope of the role

7. Qualifications and Experience:
Education

  • Bachelor’s degree (minimum) in Management, Logistics, Civil Engineering, IT, Biodiversity and Conservation Management or any related field

Experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in a similar role
  • Experience in managing logistical and technical operations
  • Experience working in remote or conservation environments is highly desirable
  • Proven experience in managing multidisciplinary teams

Technical Skills

  • Strong knowledge of logistics, infrastructure, and operational management
  • Good understanding of IT systems and communication networks
  • Knowledge of safety standards and operational procedures
  • Ability to manage projects and budgets
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in both French and English (written and spoken)
  • Strong willingness to and experience living in a remote location
