Position : Tool Maker - Gauteng

Our Client is looking to hire a Tool Maker, with precision engineering skills to create and maintain tools, dies, jigs, and fixtures used in manufacturing processes.
Key Responsibilities

  • Design and Planning: Read and interpret blueprints, design schematics, and computer-aided design (CAD) drawings to plan operations for fabrication.
  • Machining and Fabrication: Set up and operate machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, grinders, and drill presses to cut and shape materials to specified dimensions and fine tolerances.
  • Assembly and Finishing: File, grind, shim, fit, and assemble parts of tools and dies, ensuring a smooth finish and proper fit.
  • Quality Control: Inspect and test completed tools for defects, smoothness, and accuracy using precision measuring instruments like micrometers and gauges.
  • Maintenance and Repair: Perform routine and preventative maintenance on existing tools and dies, and troubleshoot and repair malfunctioning equipment to minimize production downtime.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with engineers, production teams, and other machinists to identify tooling needs, improve designs, and resolve manufacturing problems.
  • Safety and Standards: Adhere to all Health & Safety regulations and quality standards (e.g., FSSC, GMP) in the work environment.

    Qualifications and Skills

    • Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is generally required, often supplemented by a technical degree or relevant vocational training.
    • Certification: Completion of a formal tool and die maker apprenticeship program or a trade certificate (e.g., Red Seal Trade Tested Tool, Jig & Die Maker in South Africa) is often a key requirement.
    • Experience: Employers typically seek a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a manufacturing or toolroom environment, with senior roles requiring 7-10+ years.

    Technical Skills:

    • Proficiency with various hand tools, power tools, and machine tools.
    • Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and technical specifications.
    • Knowledge of CAD/CAM software (e.g., SolidWorks, Mastercam) and CNC programming is often an advantage.
    • Expertise in using precision measuring instruments.
    • Understanding of metallurgy and different materials used in toolmaking.

    • Exceptional attention to detail and manual dexterity.
    • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
    • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
    • Good communication skills to collaborate with different departments.
