Job Summary
The Protection Officer is responsible for implementing and monitoring protection activities to ensure the safety, rights, and wellbeing of vulnerable populations, including women, children, persons with disabilities, and displaced communities. The role involves identifying protection risks, coordinating with stakeholders, advocating for safe access to services, and promoting community awareness of protection principles.
Key Responsibilities
Protection Monitoring & Assessment

  • Conduct regular assessments to identify protection risks, vulnerabilities, and needs within communities.
  • Collect, analyze, and report protection-related data to inform program planning and response.
  • Monitor compliance with humanitarian protection standards and ethical guidelines.

Case Management & Referral

  • Support individuals and families in need of protection services, including referral to medical, legal, psychosocial, or social services.
  • Maintain confidential case records while adhering to data protection and ethical standards.
  • Follow up on referred cases to ensure appropriate services are received.

Community Engagement & Awareness

  • Promote community awareness of protection rights, safe practices, and available services.
  • Facilitate community-based protection activities and participatory approaches to risk reduction.
  • Engage with local leaders, authorities, and other stakeholders to advocate for protection measures.

Coordination & Reporting

  • Collaborate with Protection Manager, program teams, and humanitarian partners to implement protection strategies.
  • Support the development of policies, procedures, and SOPs for protection activities.
  • Prepare regular reports on protection activities, trends, and key issues for management and donors.

Capacity Building

  • Support training and awareness initiatives for staff and community members on protection principles, child protection, gender-based violence, and safeguarding.
  • Mentor and guide field staff on ethical protection practices.

Qualifications
Education & Professional Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Human Rights, International Relations, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Professional training or certification in protection, child protection, gender-based violence, or humanitarian standards is an advantage.

Experience

  • Minimum 5–8 years’ experience in protection, humanitarian programming, or social services, preferably in emergency or conflict-affected settings.
  • Experience with vulnerable populations, case management, or community-based protection is highly desirable.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong understanding of humanitarian protection standards, IASC guidelines, and international human rights frameworks.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and advocacy skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure in complex humanitarian environments.
  • Cultural sensitivity and ability to work with diverse communities.
  • Strong report-writing and documentation skills.

Working Conditions

  • Field-based with interaction in communities, camps, and program sites.
  • Exposure to security and operational risks common in humanitarian settings.
  • May require travel to remote or conflict-affected areas.
