Position : Head of Nursing - General Medical Services - Abuja

African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has announced the commencement of its African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) project in Abuja, Nigeria. It will provide world-class care to both low and high-income patient groups across the continent. The AMCE in Partnership with King's College Hospital London will be located in Abuja, which is a hub for travel in Nigeria and West Africa, enabling it to attract patients across the region.
The African Medical Centre of Excellence will be implemented in four phases over a six-year period, starting with a 170-bed specialist hospital before expanding to a 500-bed facility. The centre will have the potential to provide services to over 200,000 patients in Nigeria and a further 150,000 patients from neighbouring West African countries within its first five years of operation.
The clinical areas the centre will specialise in Cardiology, Haematology and Oncology. A range of businesses providing relevant health support will support this facility and provide commercial services to its patients and staff, thus creating a healthcare ecosystem sustainably designed to deliver long-term value to its community and region.
This is an outstanding initiative and creates a unique opportunity to be involved in the opening chapter of this exciting project that is set to make a decisive impact on non-communicable disease care across Nigeria and West Africa. The AMCE will benefit millions of people in Abuja and over the wider regions of West Africa. Job Summary
As the Head of Nursing for General Medical Services, you will be tasked with the responsibility of being the operational nursing lead, ensuring the delivery of patient flow, safety and also administrative operations such as workforce planning. The post holder will be responsible for all the nursing care planned and delivered within General Medical Services, ensuring the highest standards are met and comply with statutory requirements.
In conjunction with the CNO and the Clinical Director, the post holder will monitor the effectiveness of clinical care provided to patients and their families within General Medical Services by regularly undertaking quality reviews to ensure that agreed policies and practices are followed at all times. In addition to this, it is expected for the post holder to provide exemplary clinical leadership, being able to advise on any clinical issues in the assessing, planning, delivery and evaluation of care.
In addition to the clinical aspects of nursing operations, it is also essential that the Head of Nursing is able to smoothly deliver on the administrative operations of the General Medical Services department. In collaboration with the Chief Nursing Officer, the post holder will be partially accountable for the setting of the General Medical Services spend in accordance with budget setting processes set by the organisation. The post holder will be help oversee the management of expenditure against the General Medical Services budget, ensuring that nursing operations can be delivered within the agreed financial parameters.
The successful candidate will be someone that possesses exceptional leadership skills, with the ability to provide a high level of General Medical Services expertise both from an administrative and clinical operational perspective to a wide range of staff. We are seeking a registered nurse that has a broad knowledge of overseeing clinical and administrative service within General Medical Services, being able to successfully provide a forward thinking approach to help drive the department and lead by example. The post holder will be a driven leader that provides professional clear direction to all nursing and associated health practitioners, with the aim of striving for excellence in all aspects of the delivery of patient care.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership

  • Take ownership of the General Medical Services nursing strategy budgets, ensuring resources are allocated correctly and expenses are accounted for.
  • Accountable for policy implementation and the nursing operating procedures for General Medical Services
  • Take responsibility for planning and overseeing admission, nursing, and patient care processes.
  • Ensure and cultivate a culture of integrity, transparency and respect, as per AMCE values, throughout the Department
  • Lead others in the development of knowledge, ideas and practices within Inpatient nursing services.
  • Be a representation of the General Medical Services in all meetings/external events.
  • Be accountable for the delivery of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) set for the General Medical Services.
  • Take overall responsibility for overseeing all personnel operating on the General Medical Services, ensuring any reporting on incidents, following up with divisional heads.

Strategic Development

  • Ensure the correct system and processes are in place to enable the implementation of nursing strategy plans for Inpatient services.
  • To play a significant role in ensuring provision of high quality General Medical nursing services.
  • To develop and implement processes, policies and structures that support efficient, effective and high-quality service delivery, ensuring safe evidence- based practices are carried out at all times.
  • Forecast, identify and provide solutions in order to prevent any problems to nursing operations within the department.

Governance

  • To monitor standards of care on a regular basis through regular reviews of General Medical Services delivery to patients.
  • Optimise patient outcomes and experience, seeking innovative new methods to improve service delivery for General Medical Services.
  • Ensure correct governances arrangements, which include the management of finance and regulatory activity where appropriate.

Line Management

  • Develop and maintain General Medical Services nursing staff with the appropriate mix of business knowledge and technical skills required to achieve strategic objectives and ensure the core functions of the department are reliable, stable and efficient.
  • Provide strong leadership to develop, coach and ensure a high-performing team.
  • Identify areas of nursing practice within the speciality needing to be improved.

Qualifications

  • Nursing degree
  • Professional qualification in the relevant subject
  • Full Registration with the Nigerian Nursing and Midwifery Council
  • Continuation of professional development

Experience

  • Extensive experience in a senior nursing and managerial leadership position across general medical services
  • Proven experience in implementing change within the nursing operations of a hospital
  • High-level understanding of clinical services across a mix of specialities
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to staff and patients’ needs where necessary
  • Experience of people management
  • Experienced in Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance with demonstrable understanding of how this improves the quality of care provided to patients
  • Experience of managing a team of staff within a Critical Care environment with a track record of meeting objectives outlined
  • Experience of leading on the development of nursing services 
  • Experience in the management of risk within clinical teams, finding ways to manage this and provide solutions
  • Inspirational and visible leader, with first class communication skills, capable of engaging audiences at all levels
  • Ability to think and act strategically, developing practical
  • innovative and creative solutions to the management of issues and complex problems
