Job Summary
The Staff Counsellor is responsible for providing professional psychosocial support and counselling services to employees of Impactwave International. The role focuses on promoting mental wellbeing, resilience, and healthy coping strategies for staff working in high-stress and complex humanitarian environments.
The Staff Counsellor works confidentially with individuals and teams, supports staff wellbeing initiatives, and advises management on staff care and psychosocial risk mitigation.
Key Responsibilities
Counselling & Psychosocial Support
- Provide confidential individual counselling to staff experiencing work-related stress, emotional challenges, or personal difficulties.
- Offer short-term, solution-focused counselling and appropriate referrals when specialized or long-term support is required.
- Support staff returning from critical incidents, field deployments, or medical leave.
Staff Wellbeing & Prevention
- Design and implement staff wellbeing programs that promote resilience, self-care, and work-life balance.
- Conduct stress management, burnout prevention, and resilience-building sessions for teams.
- Support the development of a positive and psychologically safe work environment.
Critical Incident Support
- Provide psychosocial support following critical or stressful incidents, in coordination with HR and management.
- Participate in debriefings and support processes as required, while maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality.
Training & Awareness
- Deliver training sessions and workshops on topics such as stress management, mental health awareness, and coping in humanitarian contexts.
- Support managers and supervisors with guidance on staff wellbeing and supportive leadership practices.
Coordination & Reporting
- Work closely with HR, management, and staff care focal points to integrate psychosocial support into organizational policies and practices.
- Maintain confidential records in line with professional ethics and organizational policies.
- Prepare anonymized wellbeing reports and recommendations to inform staff care strategies (without breaching confidentiality).

Qualifications
Education & Professional Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Counselling, Social Work, Mental Health, or a related field.
- Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, or related discipline is an advantage.
- Valid professional registration or license to practice counselling (where applicable).
Experience
- Minimum 5–8 years’ experience providing counselling or psychosocial support.
- Experience working in humanitarian, development, NGO, or emergency settings is highly desirable.
- Experience supporting staff exposed to high-stress or challenging environments is an asset.

- Strong counselling and active listening skills.
- High level of professionalism, empathy, and cultural sensitivity.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and ethical boundaries.
- Strong communication and facilitation skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage emotional demands of the role.
Working Conditions
- Office-based in Juba with interaction across field teams.
- Exposure to emotionally demanding situations; access to supervision and self-care support is encouraged.
- Occasional travel to field locations as security conditions allow.
